THE STORY OF DAY
Birger et Mikkelsen
DAY Birger et Mikkelsen is the brainchild of Keld Mikkelsen, whose founding vision it was to capture a chic silhouette and combine it with ethnic details inspired from his world travels. Since the brand’s launch in 1997, the higher purpose has consistently been to create versatile fashion that aims at fulfilling the needs of a modern woman and showcase the contemporary aesthetic of the everyday.
Truth lies in timeless, versatile design. A fusion between near and far, local and global, DAY Birger et Mikkelsen embodies a certain sophistication derived from Keld Mikkelsen’s fascination with the exceptional craftsmanship he witnessed in Hong Kong and India, the presence of colour and the importance of detail. DAY’s purpose to create wearable, effortlessly elegant fashion for modern women is unwavering and gracefully hovers between art and craft, ancient and contemporary, native and exotic.
Since opening its doors, DAY Birger et Mikkelsen has grown to become a global design presence available in over 1,000 points of sale, across 25 countries. The house is made up of a women’s wear line, DAY Birger et Mikkelsen; an interiors collection, DAY Home; the brand, 2NDDAY; and the accessories line, DAY et.
Keld Mikkelsen is the founder and owner of DAY Birger et Mikkelsen. Fashion is deep in his DNA. From his involvement with the textile industry even before his 20’s to a decade spent working in Asia. Fascinated by the exceptional craftsmanship in Hong Kong and India, Keld decided to merge ancient embroidery, patterns, prints and trimmings with contemporary silhouettes and tailoring. Transporting these amazing crafts to Denmark, where they are reincarnated into a new life through DAY’s four lines:
Marianne Brandi is the founder and designer of DAY Home, established in 2005. Interior and fashion is Marianne’s creative outlet, she has always had a passion for textiles and has a collection of vintage and antique fabrics from the middle and far East. These fabrics are often the source of inspiration of prints and artworks seen in the collections. Even before she found her way to designing, she was involved in DAY Birger et Mikkelsen through sales and by having her own store called BRANDI. In 2014 she became the creative director of DAY. Due to the fact that the couple lives by the shores of Lake Como, it seemed natural to move the design department to Lugano. Here a team of Italian designers were carefully selected to maintain and renew the design heritage of DAY. Marianne Brandi and Keld Mikkelsen have been a couple for more than 25 years and are to this day working closely together.
